Professor Zhou Yaoguang created &quot;Pinyin,&quot; the romanisation system for Chinese characters that made one billion Chinese literate. Born in 1906, Zhou lived through four Chinese dynasties before his death in 2017, aged 111. He had many lives -- a student at St John&rsquo;s and Kyoto Universities; provided food and clothing for the nation under Japanese bombing in World War II; international banker in New York and London; creator of Pinyin; spent 28 months in a Maoist labour camp; editor of Encyclopedia Britannica in Chinese; and the author of 49 books, many critical of the Soviet Union and the Soviet model used in China and of Mao Zedong. In his last 20 years, he was one of the few intellectuals in China willing to speak the truth in public. Mark O&rsquo;Neill will describe his extraordinary life and the secret of his longevity.
